Nuclear energy should be used to better serve mankind: Chinese diplomat

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) should increase the application of nuclear science and technology so that nuclear energy can better serve mankind, a Chinese diplomat said Tuesday.

Hu Xiaodi, China’s permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Vienna, told an IAEA meeting that the agency has achieved great results in promoting the development of global nuclear energy and related fields.

Particularly, he said, the agency has played an important role in helping, guiding and supporting developing countries to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

In the fields of cancer treatment, sterile insect technique, environmental protection and food security, a lot of appropriate supports have been provided by the Agency to the member states, creating significant social and economic benefits for many developing countries, Hu added.

He urged agency to further strengthen its efforts in the global issues dealing with environmental protection, human health and food security and to play a bigger role in promoting sustainable development.

In his speech, Hu also briefed the audience about the development and peaceful use of nuclear technology in China, saying nuclear power usage in China has now entered a stage of rapid development.

He said that China’ s nuclear technology development always emphasizes on the combination of independent development and cooperation with foreign countries.
