MAS signs deal to reduce CO2 emission

National carrier, Malaysia Airlines signed a service deal with UK company, Pratt & Whitney’s, which will see it using the latter’s environmentally-friendly EcoPower engine wash service for its aircraft engines.

The deal was signed at the 49th Paris Air Show which took off here Monday with a total of 2,100 international exhibitors, as well as, companies from the global aviation industry including MAS, participating at what is known as the largest biannual aviation event in the world.

In a joint statement issued here by MAS and Pratt & Whitney’s, MAS Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Tengku Datuk Seri Azmil Zahruddin said the engine wash service was expected to not only further reduce the emission of carbon dioxide but also contribute to significant reduction in fuel consumption throughout MAS’ fleet.

Under the deal, MAS will lease one EcoPower engine washing equipment and perform its own washes at the KL International Airport in Sepang.

Pratt & Whitney’s Product Line Management Vice President Lou Quattrocchi said the wash engine uses a closed-loop system that collects and recycles water making the entire process environmentally-friendly.

The patented engine wash system by Pratt & Whitney’s, a global leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, and space propulsion systems, will reduce fuel burn as much as 1.2 per cent, eliminating three pounds of carbon dioxide emission for every pound of fuel saved.

MAS operates a fleet of more than 100 aircraft connecting over 100 destinations in all six continents.
