Alibaba-owned e-commerce brand Lazada has appointed the company’s in-house lawyer to run its sustainability operations.

Gladys Chun, who has been Lazada’s general counsel since 2014, will now lead its environmental, social and governance (ESG) unit.

Lazada’s sustainability focus areas include empowering communities, championing sustainable business practices and managing environmental impact, according to the 11 year-old firm’s first sustainability report, published last year.

Chun’s appointment follows the departure of Lazada’s first sustainability head Janet Neo last year. Neo has since moved to consumer good firms L’Oréal as its chief sustainability officer for North Asia and China.

Chun will run Lazada’s sustainability team in addition to her role as legal counsel, which involves her leading the company’s legal and compliance department.

“This addition and expansion [of my role at Lazada] is timely as coming out of [a] pandemic has taught us many lessons about the world we are living in and the world we want to create for the next generation,” Chun wrote in a post on LinkedIn. She also said she looks forward to partnering with other sustainability advocates to “drive transformative action” in her new role.

Before joining Lazada, Chun was legal counsel for Yum! Restaurants International, the owner of fast food restaurant chains KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell.
