Keidanren to focus on five cooperation fields in Indonesia

The Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Keidanren) has agreed to focus on five main economic fields in its cooperation with Indonesia.

“They are committed to development (with a focus) on five main fields,” Economic Coordinating Minister Hatta Rajasa said after a meeting with a delegation of the Japanese business organisation at his office here Monday.

The five main fields were transportation infrastructure such as railroads, marine ports, airports, roads and economic corridors in Java.

Also included was electrical energy supply from renewable energy sources such as geothermal and low carbon emissions coal.

They would also cooperate in any related fields that are necessary for industrial expansion, particularly connections to Java Island via ports.

Clean water and gas and oil energy development are two other focuses of the proposed cooperation.

“I asked them to enter the frontier areas in oil and gas energy development,” he said.

The minister said the Keidanren delegation’s visit to Indonesia was part of a tour of ASEAN member countries.

Keidanren was also interested in the ASEAN integration plan for 2015 and the ASEAN Connectivity establishment.

“But before the ASEAN Connectivity (plan is) implemented, we must be able to create Indonesia Connectivity,” he said.

Coordinating Minister Hatta Rajasa also said that Japan offered its bilateral mechanism offset concept by paying Indonesia to develop low carbon emissions energy sources.

Previously the United Nations (UN) had also proposed the mechanism idea but it was considered too slow, Hatta said.

“The Japanese Chambers are offering the scheme and we asked for it to be included within the Indonesian-Japan cooperation framework. This program is…able to reduce the energy development cost,” said Hatta.
