Gov’t launches programme to improve S’pore companies capabilities

The Government has launched the Innovation Improvement Initiative (i3) Programme, to help enhance Singapore companies capabilities in innovation and productivity.

It is a project-based programme designed to jumpstart productivity improvement.

Announcing the initiative on Friday, Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong said under the initiative, companies send teams comprising top management as well as line operators to be coached and mentored by productivity experts from Motorola University.

The US-based institution is a leader in corporate education and globally renowned for its Six Sigma business productivity expertise.

The companies taking part will receive guidance on problem-solving and best practices to improve productivity and innovation.

“Making this significant leap in productivity will require a holistic and coordinated approach at all levels: at the industry-, enterprise- and worker-levels,” said Gan.

“At the industry level, we will have to fundamentally re-look the structure and operations of our key sectors, to review if we have the right industry set-up and the right value chain to capitalise on growth opportunities and build up capabilities for higher productivity,” he added.

The Workforce Development Agency (WDA) will pay up to 70 per cent of the fees.

It is projected that the agency will invest up to a million dollars over two years for this programme.

Mr Gan said the launch of the i3 programme signifies a strong commitment by the Government to reach out to the business community in the productivity drive, through strategic partners such as the Singapore Business Federation (SBF).

The federation will actively reach out to companies and encourage them to improve productivity through skills and innovation.
