First solar-energy building connection

Viet Nam’s first solar energy system connected to the grid, which will provide electricity to the Ministry of Industry and Trade offices, was inaugurated in Ha Noi yesterday.

The 1 million euro (US$1.37 million) project funded by the German government covered 100 square metres with 52 modules of solar power battery panels.

The system could produce up to 18,000kWh annually and help the ministry save VND12 million ($600).

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor of Baden Wurrtemberg Stefan Mappus said the system designed by the Altus AG Company was part of a solar development programme for foreign countries.

He said the programme was launched by German Energy Company DENA in 2004, adding that it was given support from the Ministry of Economics and Technology.

Under the programme, 30 similar projects were carried out in several countries.

He added that Viet Nam should focus on developing solar energy due to its favourable geography.

He affirmed that German enterprises would co-operate with the country to enhance clean energy resources which would contribute to environmental protection.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Le Duong Quang said the system would serve as an example to improve people’s awareness of energy savings and environmental protection.

He said the ministry would call for domestic and international businesses to participate in the projects. However, he said renewable energy development in Viet Nam has faced difficulties due to the huge initial investment and higher prices compared to other energy resources, combined with a lack of general awareness of the issue.

He said the Government has provided preferential policies to encourage businesses to participate in the development of renewable energy under the public-private partnership model.
