Battery storage: Holy grail for renewable energy?

Battery storage technologies is one of the remaining barriers for the large-scale deployment of renewable energy. Philippe McCracken, a project engineer who helped install the $5.9 milllion solar photovoltaic system that now runs the whole island of Tokelau, said that the holy grail of the renewable energy world is to have a cheap form of storage. Energy storage technologies are already fast maturing to keep up with the growing demand for renewables. King Island in Tasmania is set to install advanced lead-acid batteries to store excess wind energy.
