40 MW Indian solar plant contract awarded

Aries Waaree Solar has bagged an engineering contract for a major solar project planned by the Adani group in the Indian state of Gujarat.

India Adani Power Ltd’s plant will join 400 MW of new capacity put on track by state-owned Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam two months ago through state-backed guaranteed returns, according to New Dehli’s Mint newspaper.

The Adani project is the largest among the planned raft of new plants. Gautam Adani, chairman of the diversified Adani Group, told the Mint his firm is setting up the facility as part of an “endeavour to promote environment-friendly and green technologies”.

Aries Waaree Solar Pvt Ltd (AWSPL) – a joint venture between Mumbai’s Waaree Group and Spain’s Aries Ingenieria Sistemas – has been picked to provide engineering services to set up the 40 MW solar PV plant.

“We are delighted to develop this important project for Adani Group,” said Alberto Sanchez, business development manager for Asia, Aries Ingenieria y Sistemas.

“It represents an important milestone in the development of solar energy in India.”

Gujarat’s sunny climate and abundant unused land is seen as offering vast untapped potential for solar projects. The Indian central government’s Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission aims to install 1,100 MW of solar power in the state.

The state government is also poised to sign agreements to build another 500-700 MW of new solar generation capacity this month, according to the Mint.
