Alistair Monument, the Asia Pacific conservation impact director for WWF International, has joined ISEAL as global director of programmes. He will be based in Hong Kong.

ISEAL is a United Kingdom-headquartered global association for sustainability standards. Monument will lead initiatives including the ISEAL Innovation Fund, a grant-making facility for sustainability systems, and the Global Living Wage Coalition, which works on sustainability standards that support a living wage for workers.

He will also work on expanding ISEAL’s presence in Asia Pacific and supporting sustainability standards systems coming from the region.

Founded in 2002, ISEAL was formed to improve sustainability standards and counts the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Fairtrade among its members.

Monument joins the organisation after eight and a half years with WWF, where he was also global practice leader for forests and interim director for Asia Pacific during his time with the conservation group.

WWF International recently underwent a major restructure that saw all director-level roles made redundant.

Prior to joining WWF, Monument spent 14 years with FSC. He was FSC’s Asia Pacific director, establishing the group’s regional presence in Hong Kong in 2011, technical director for China, and founding director of Assurance Services International, FSC’s accreditation agency.

Monument started his career with the Forestry Commission in the UK, and has had stints in Myanmar as socio-economic and environmental coordinator for Premier Oil, and in Brussels as a consultant to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization.

He is a member of the board of trustees for Traffic, a non-profit fighting the illegal wildlife trade.
