Tighter controls for Pacific bigeye tuna mulled

Citing negative impacts from overfishing, commercial fishing regulators are looking into slashing the annual catch for bigeye tuna by 30 per cent. Professor Glenn Hurry, executive director of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, said that the science has been consistent for the last three or four years that a 30 per cent reduction is needed to restore the fish population. The move is expected to draw opposition from the commercial fishers in the western and central Pacific where half of the world’s tuna supply are sourced.
