Mahindra aims to develop electric cars after Ssangyong takeover

India’s Mahindra and Mahindra, the preferred bidder for Ssangyong Motor, said if it takes over the Korean automaker it will focus on enhancing its research and development capacity.

In a meeting in Seoul on Friday, Pawan Goenka, president of Mahindra and Mahindra Global Automotive, said the firm will concentrate on developing electric vehicles through cooperation with Ssangyong and Reva, the Indian carmaker that it acquired this year.

Goenka said he recently contacted a Korean electric car battery supplier. He also visited Ssangyong’s plant in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province on Thursday and test-drove an electric car that is under development.
