EU strikes Korea from list of illegal fishing countries

Korea has been removed from the European Union’s list of countries engaged in illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries here said the decision was reached in recognition of Korea’s efforts to eradicate illegal fishing.

Since Korea’s inclusion in 2013, the government has taken a series of measures to curb illegal fishing by Korean-registered vessels, like requiring boats to have GPS tracking and reducing the number of fishing vessels operating in seas off West Africa.

The US removed Korea from its list of illegal fishing countries in February.
