Out of the green capital expenditure announced across the region between now and 2030, only around US$315 billion is on a credible path to deployment, as energy security eclipses climate goals, found a report by Bain & Company.
SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics are among the world's fastest-growing AI revenue companies on the back of surging demand for high-bandwidth memory and AI chips. But such chips consume up to five times more energy per gigabyte to produce than standard memory, analysts warn.
Cities across the region are expected to endure up to 120 days a year above 35°C by 2050, with Thailand's capital seen to be hit the hardest, according to a study by the Asean Centre for Energy.
As concerns over the environmental impacts of data centres grow, firms including Equinix, AirTrunk and ST Telemedia have backed a new regional initiative aimed at advancing sustainability across the sector.
