The government said Wednesday it plans to install the world’s largest battery to store renewable energy at an electrical substation in Hokkaido, where solar power generation facilities are rapidly increasing.
It is the first case in the world in which a large-scale storage battery will be installed at a utility’s substation, an official of the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry said.
The ministry expects a battery with some 60,000 kilowatt hours of storage capacity to be installed by the end of fiscal 2014, using a large part of the 29.6 billion yen earmarked for battery projects under the fiscal 2012 reserve funds, the official said.
