Rising sea levels linked to climate change will result in serious food security issues in the Pacific in the next few decades, said an Australian climate expert. Mark Howden, who leads the food security chapter of an upcoming UN report on climate change, said the population boom had made Pacific Islands dependent on food importation. With rising sea levels, he said, comes the spike in prices of food to account for the cost of shipping to outer islands. In the longer term, he added, fuel prices will increase and affect the cost of food transport to Pacific Islands.
