Sustainable Cosmetics Summit returns to Hong Kong

London – The Sustainable Cosmetics Summit returns to Hong Kong on 10–11th November. The 7th Asia-Pacific edition will feature green ingredients, sustainability schemes, and green packaging solutions. The programme comprises three conference sessions and two workshops, hosted by international experts.

Debra Sadranu, founder of the sustainable skincare brand Nama Fiji, will open the summit with a keynote on Building a Sustainable Brand. Originally launched as a line of seaweed-based products for Fijian spas in the 1990s, Nama Fiji has since developed an international presence. Nama seaweed is sustainably harvested and contributes to social impact by creating employment opportunities for women in the Yasawa Islands.

Sebastien Pivot, Chief Sustainability Officer and QA Director of the AS Watson Group, will share the retailer’s sustainability experiences. The AS Watson Group is the world’s leading health & beauty retailer, operating over 16,500 stores in 28 countries, with more than half trading in Asia under the Watsons banner. Sebastien will highlight how the retailer is addressing its environmental and social impacts.

Also in the opening session, Tarun Menon from Kantar will present the latest consumer research on sustainability and personal care products. Which sustainability issues matter most to Asian consumers? How have attitudes toward green issues shifted since the pandemic? Given the deforestation risks in many parts of Asia, Eugenia Kwok from Canopy will advocate for alternative materials for paper and packaging, showing how personal care brands can reduce reliance on virgin paper and cardboard.

Amarjit Sahota, Founder of Ecovia Intelligence, will introduce the Sustainability Schemes session, providing an update on the growing number of sustainability schemes and ethical labels in the cosmetics industry. Laurent Milet from COSMOS-Standard ASBL will discuss natural and organic cosmetic standards. With nearly 57,000 certified products and ingredients, COSMOS has become the leading standard for natural and organic cosmetics globally.

Indonesia will become the first country to make Halal labeling compulsory for cosmetics and personal care products, with a compliance deadline of October 2026. Dr. Ir. Muslich from the Indonesian organisation LPPOM will explain the Halal standard and outline how foreign brands can obtain certification. The session will conclude with a panel discussion on the future of sustainability schemes, labels, and roundtables in Asia: will the industry see increasing divergence, or is some convergence on the horizon?

The Green Ingredients session will explore new and emerging raw materials for personal care products. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in selecting green ingredients and creating sustainable formulations will be discussed. Chris Kuk from Croda Beauty will explain how the company is developing low-carbon ingredients for personal care products. Nicolas Labistes from DSM-Firmenich will discuss the role of green chemistry in ingredient development. The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) will provide an update on sustainable palm oil, while the Indian brand Kheoni will give insights into how it has created a range of sustainable personal care products. The session will conclude with a panel discussion on innovating with natural ingredients.

The first day of the programme comprises two training workshops. Professor Miguel Mendonca Reis Brandao from KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden) will host a morning workshop on Sustainability Metrics, explaining how organisations use metrics to measure environmental, social, and financial performance. Metrics are also important tools in measuring impacts, operational efficiency, as well as communicating to stakeholders.

Professor Simon Lockrey from RMIT University (Australia) will conduct a workshop on Green Packaging Solutions. The afternoon workshop will cover practical strategies for cosmetic and personal care companies to reduce packaging impacts. With an increasing number of brands moving away from single-use plastics, Professor Lockrey will discuss the alternatives. An update will also be given on the growing array of sustainable packaging materials.
