Robust legal frameworks, backed by effective enforcement, can create the conditions for stable and rights-respecting mining. That means safeguarding Indigenous rights, protecting water resources and ensuring independent, participatory, and transparent impact assessments.
Even as political denial and regulatory paralysis grip parts of the West, a different message has been resounding across Asia – it is not retreating, but rising to the occasion.
Coalbed methane is an underappreciated problem of global steel production. While cutting methane emissions in the steel supply chain will not produce green steel overnight, it could reduce the sector’s emissions by the equivalent of a billion tons of carbon annually, and at little cost.

Rethinking ocean finance
Despite the obvious importance of ocean processes and systems to planetary health and the global economy, humanity is not investing nearly enough in ocean sustainability. To ensure that we do, public- and private-sector leaders will need to collaborate on widening the appeal of critical projects.
