Worsening air pollution in Asia threatens health

The deteriorating air quality in Asian cities may pose dangers to human health, according to experts. Data collated by Clean Air Asia from more than 300 cities in 16 Asian countries show that the level of air pollutants in 16 cities fell below target set by the World Health Organization. Clean Air Asia said pollution levels in 70 per cent of the Asian cities studied, the bulk of which are in the fast-growing countries of China and India, as well as Bangladesh and Mongolia, have exceeded the most lenient levels recommended by the WHO. The growth in both passenger and freight vehicles, as well as power plants are affecting the urban air quality of the region, Clean Air Asia said.
