Tasmania may lose $7 billion carbon credit bonus

Some $7 billion windfall from carbon credits may have been missed by the Tasmanian government due to an oversight, said Andrew MacIntosh, associate director of the Australian National University Centre for Law and Climate Policy. He said the Tasmanian government had made a major strategic error for not capitalising on a potential billion-dollar payout from a forest agreement signed by timber industry representatives and environmental groups last week. The Tasmanian Forest Agreement was to supposed to conserve 504,000 hectares of forest area. MacIntosh said apart from spending $261 million to enforce the agreement, is also in a position to keep the financial benefits of any carbon credits earned as a result of forest conservation.
