Without a holistic ecosystem and complementary policies, the country’s attempt to crack down on public littering through fines may only deliver short-term compliance and not lasting behavioural change.
Dozens of waste workers remain missing following an avalanche of garbage at a landfill site in the central Philippines that occurred on 8 January. The landfill functioned as an open dump, which is prohibited under environment laws.
Chinese cities have more waste incinerators than they need, while rural areas go short. Change is needed.
