At just 12 years old, Syazwan Luftan Riady started a grassroots nonprofit of young people in East Java province focused on environmental protection.
Through a $50,000 sustainability education grant, students are turning personal experiences of environmental change into real-world projects.
Without a holistic ecosystem and complementary policies, the country’s attempt to crack down on public littering through fines may only deliver short-term compliance and not lasting behavioural change.
While government message boards and NGOs are growing in importance, community self-organising remains crucial.
