India flush with wastewater treatment opportunities

Urban contracts for wastewater treatment are expected to drive industry growth for decades as India’s cities struggle to meet water shortages and cope with growing pollution. A Chennai-based company and the country’s largest plant supplier, VA Tech Wabag, says it will take decades to develop the sanitation and water treatment infrastructure that India’s cities lack. Mumbai alone is planning eight sewage treatment plants worth $1 billion.

The industry expects additonal growth in desalination plants and in treatment for power generation and other industrial facilities. Recent studies have shown that India does not have enough water to operate the new power plants it is planning for its population of 1.2 billion people.
