Overseas experts praise Taiwan greening efforts

Taiwan’s efforts in cutting carbon emissions have received recognition by international experts at the 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the 7th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol in Durban, South Africa, the ROC Environmental Protection Administration said Dec. 8.

The EPA made the remarks after Chien Hui-chen, deputy director of the agency’s Department of Air Quality and Noise Control, introduced to participants of the conference the actions Taiwan has taken to reduce carbon emission and its visions of actively joining the international carbon market mechanism.

“Actions introduced include pushing for the passing of a draft act on greenhouse gas reduction and relevant management regulations,” the EPA said, adding that many countries were interested in the act and inquired further details, such as reduction requirements.

The 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the 7th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, with over 190 representatives from around the world, will run from Nov. 28 to Dec. 9.
