Emission cutting gear to be tested in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Environment Bureau and franchised bus companies will soon conduct a trial of the retrofitting of Euro II and III buses with selective catalytic reduction devices to cut nitrogen-oxide emissions, a local environmental official said on Wednesday.

Acting Secretary for the Environment of Hong Kong Kitty Poon told the city’s legislators Wednesday the trial will start in the third quarter. The initial results will be analyzed after six months to study the feasibility of retrofitting Euro II and III buses with the devices on a large-scale.

She said the devices are effective in reducing nitrogen oxides and have been applied to Euro IV and Euro V diesel commercial vehicles.

According to the preliminary information provided by suppliers, she said the cost of a large-scale retrofit is about 150,000 HK dollars (about 19,283 U.S. dollars) per bus. The actual cost will depend on the complexity of the retrofit, exchange rate and the trial results.
