Drivers told ‘hang in’ for electric cars

Australian drivers fed up with high petrol costs over Easter are being urged to “hang in there” for an electric car.

National average petrol prices have hit a 30-month high ahead of the long holiday weekend, electric vehicle services provider Better Place Australia said on Tuesday.

“Easter drivers are being caught on the hop yet again,” Better Place Australia CEO Evan Thornley said.

“Every year, people who just want to get away for a few days are held to ransom by high petrol prices.”

Instead, Australians who are in the market for a new car in the next 12-18 months should “hang in there”, Mr Thornley said.

“Electric cars are coming.”

Better Place Australia is building infrastructure across Australia to service the growing market for electric cars.

The company will begin deploying its extensive charging network in Canberra later this year, with plans to extend its national coverage from late 2012.

The next year-and-a-half will see more major car manufacturers bring in medium and large-size electric cars to Australia, Mr Thornley said.

“Drivers should seriously consider making that new car an electric car because electric cars are faster, quieter, cleaner and - most importantly - cheaper to run,” he said.
