Bangladesh fire sparks clothing industry action

Clothing retailers from around the globe have banded together to try to beef up work standards for Bangladeshi clothing factories after last week’s fire that killed 111 people. 19 buyer companies - including H&M, Sears, Global Merchants, GAP, Nike, Levis, and Carrefour - met with the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association and demanded rapid action on safety violations that they say are rampant in the industry. Common violations include faulty electrical wiring and insufficient safety exits. Workers from the industry have been protesting the conditions, and also allege they have not been paid for several months.
