60% production cuts in C. Java power plants

A number of hydro power plants in Central Java are experiencing production cuts of up to 60 percent, following the prolonged dry season this year and subsequent water shortages.

Among them are Ketenger, Baturraden and Banyumas plants, which are powered by water from Banjaran River.

“We’re now operating only two out of our four turbines,” the Ketenger plant’s senior supervisor Wardianto said Thursday in Banjarnegara, Central Java.

He said the two other turbines weren’t being used because the plant was lacking water supplies.

The Mrica Banjarnegara power plant’s senior supervisor Gunawan Sri Wibowo, meanwhile, said the overall power supply in Central Java dropped to 300 megawatts, or between 60 and 70 percent of the total capacity, during this year’s dry season.
