Sustainability Media Academy (SMA) Season 4

Sustainability Media Academy (SMA) Season 4

Current sustainability challenges cut across Asia Pacific, with climate change, resource scarcity, and environmental degradation affecting multiple countries and communities in the region. Geopolitical tensions and conflict, most recently the war on Iran, are adding to these pressures.

Now in its fourth season, SMA will explore the importance of intersectional and cross-border storytelling, highlighting how climate stories extend far beyond the realm of environmental journalism.

The programme will touch on how the Iran war’s disruption of liquefied natural gas supplies exposes Southeast Asia’s risky fossil-fuel expansion and fragile energy security, casting light not only to the urgency of the renewable energy shift but how it affects everything from food prices to gendered labour migration.

Based on these timely themes, reporters from all sectors such as business, finance, law, as well as photojournalism, can enrich their work by examining how environmental issues traverse those of gender, inequality, and economic development.

Training details and objectives

This two-day training brings together journalists from diverse beats to uncover the regional interconnectedness of sustainability issues through interactive sessions aimed at strengthening skills and encouraging collaboration. Participants will take part in focused learning, practical exercises, and opportunities to build connections across sectors.

The programme will run virtually from 7 to 8 May 2026, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM each day.

Journalists will sharpen their reporting skills with a focus on energy transition coverage, crafting climate narratives through community-led just transition stories, telling Asia’s climate story through a business and finance lens, and examining how artificial intelligence is reshaping the news industry.

The training will be conducted in English.

To ensure you receive your Certificate of Completion, you are required to attend all sessions in full.

No prior preparation is required, but we encourage you to come ready with questions regarding the sustainability issues that your beats face to ask our speakers.
