Cities around the world are increasingly threatened by climate change. Rising sea levels encroach upon major coastal cities like Shanghai and New York while urban heat island effects cause heat-related deaths and increased demand for energy-intensive cooling. When all of this is exacerbated by the growing populations and aging infrastructure of the cities themselves, the risk to city life as we know it is unprecedented.
However, innovative green infrastructure strategies have recently been developed to combat these effects, including green or blue roofs, permeable pavement, and wetland restoration. If major cities have any hope of remaining viable living centers, the practices are going to have to become more effective and widely implemented, which means involvement not just from designers, but from the business and governmental world alike. This forum discusses the innovations designers have made in building for our climate, and the challenges they face in implementation.
What are the main climate change-related threats facing the cities today and in the future? What are other sustainable infrastructure strategies? How can we build our urban centers so that we are both climate resilient and capable of keeping up with our growing population? How can we engage communities, small and large businesses, and governments in working together towards sustainable and climate-safe cities?
