Cambodia is stepping up its rules on exporting rice to developed nations, as the government and industry leaders agree on a ‘code of conduct’ that will ensure exports are not mixed with grains from Vietnam, Phnom Pehn Post has reported.
The move seeks to comply with European Union requirements in its ‘Everything But Arms’ scheme, which gives developing countries like Cambodia duty-free access to European markets
Exporters will be required to show proof through invoices and receipts that the rice is local to be able to get a ‘certificate of origin’ from the Ministry of Commerce. An audit committee, which will have industry and non-industry representatives will also be formed to investigate claims of fraud.
