Malaysian Biotechnology Corp (BiotechCorp) will act as project coordinator for the Korea Gas Corp’s (Kogas) demonstration plant which will produce compressed biogas and bio-dimethyl ether (DME) in Malaysia.
In the statement Tuesday, BiotechCorp said it signed the agreement with Kogas in Seoul, South Korea today.
It said the success of the plant would pave the way for commercial production of compressed biogas and DME, a cost-effective energy source that was not subjected to the wild fluctuations in oil and natural gas prices.
“DME has been identified as one of the best alternative fuels aside from fossil fuel and liquified natural gas,” it said.
BiotechCorp chief executive officer, Datuk Iskander Mizal Mahmood, said Malaysia has been actively sourcing bio-energy compounds from its agricultural wastes.
“This initiative will strengthen Malaysia’s position in the bio-industrial and bio-manufacturing space,” he said.
The agreement was signed by Iskander and Kogas vice president of research and development centre, Shin Hyun Kun.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and South Korea’s Minister of Knowledge Economy, Choi Joong-Kyung, witnessed the exchange of agreement.
