Australia’s mega solar-thermal project cancelled

A 250-megawatt massive solar-thermal project in Queensland was scrapped. It was supposed to be financed by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), but the agency announced this week it is no longer pursuing the development. ARENA approves renewable energy projects in the country. The Solar Dawn project, from a consortium led by Areva Solar, was scheduled to begin construction in 2013.

Australian Minister for Resources and Energy Martin Ferguson said abandoning the project meant walking out on $1.56 billion in economic investments to Queensland plus 300 construction and manufacturing jobs.
