For the first time, a great power has moved to price transboundary climate-driven harms–massive wildfires–and extract compensation unilaterally. What was previously a development, insurance, or emissions-accounting issue is now a security and trade dispute between two G7 economies, setting a precedent that others may try to follow.
If global greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, more severe heatwaves and droughts will make landscape fires more frequent and intense worldwide.
As global temperatures breach 1.5°C – and conflicts persist in Ukraine, Gaza and Sudan – the climate crisis is reshaping how wars are fought, understood and responded to.
We must accelerate decisive action on climate change that protects health because the climate crisis is a health crisis.
