Chokepoint in the Gulf: What the US-Israeli war on Iran means for Southeast Asia’s food security
The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz could push Aseans farmers and food prices to the brink, but the region has options to ease some of the pressure.
The Middle East conflict is set to have a double-whammy impact on both Asean’s import of fertilisers, and its energy-intensive fertiliser production. The timing is critical as in the coming months, the five major crops, including rice, are being planted in Asean.
From the Ifugao highlands to Morocco’s Anti-Atlas Mountains, Indigenous terrace farming illustrates how long-standing, locally adapted practices capture water, conserve soil and diversify crops to withstand intensifying climate extremes.
An ageing agricultural workforce bodes ill for our ability to feed the world. To entice young people to work in food systems, policymakers should demonstrate the industry’s breadth, while providing them with the resources and skills to modernise farming and build sustainable, innovative agribusinesses.
