The World Bank has made a volte-face on industrial policy. Southeast Asian countries will need to consider the new policy, but calibrate it across vastly different national contexts.
The European Union faces a strategic choice in deciding how to deal with China’s green-tech dominance. Instead of implementing defensive industrial policy, it should try to find common cause with China on clean trade and investment, using its strengths in rulemaking and norm-setting to promote both sides’ economic interests.
Through recycling, R&D and diversifying imports as well as by facilitating a regional market for rare earth minerals, the dependence on the Chinese supply chain can be reduced.
Hepatitis C treatment is no longer prohibitively expensive in the Global South because Malaysia, Thailand, Egypt and the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative developed ravidasvir – a low-cost antiviral. Such breakthroughs are possible for other neglected diseases if low- and middle-income countries agree to act collectively.
