The closure of the Strait of Hormuz showed how quickly a regional conflict can throw global energy markets into chaos. By pushing governments toward coal and biofuels, the war could accelerate deforestation and undermine climate negotiations, with environmental consequences that will linger long after the fighting ends.
Taiwan’s energy challenges highlight the limits of fossil fuel–based energy security as geopolitical tensions reshape global energy markets and supply chains.
As the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to disrupt global oil and gas flows, countries are increasingly focusing on short-term energy priorities to the detriment of long-term decarbonisation goals. In such a context, the difficult task of designing climate policies that realign incentives takes on new importance.
If the war in Iran does not end soon, the Malaysian government must have more arrows in its energy policy quiver.
