China’s data centres are expanding rapidly to meet surging AI demand – raising urgent questions about energy use, climate targets and the shift to renewables.
Vast natural-resource endowments have proven to be more of a curse than a blessing, with resource-rich countries often developing more slowly than their resource-poor counterparts. Today, countries rich in critical minerals have a chance to change this – but only if they invest in strengthening their institutional capacity.
As the world shifts towards a cleaner energy future, ensuring energy security while managing the energy transition remains a complex challenge.
The financing gap is huge, but time is short. Given the inadequacy of a promised new climate finance goal, Southeast Asia should look beyond UN-led conferences to crowd in other sources of capital to tackle the climate crisis.
