The closure of the Strait of Hormuz showed how quickly a regional conflict can throw global energy markets into chaos. By pushing governments toward coal and biofuels, the war could accelerate deforestation and undermine climate negotiations, with environmental consequences that will linger long after the fighting ends.
After developing country governments invested hundreds of millions of dollars, CASA-1000 in Central Asia has effectively failed before transferring a single watt of energy. The international institutions that conceived, financed and promoted it must be held accountable.
Electric vehicles can reduce pollution and emissions. But underlying issues of preserving car dependence, displacing environmental harm and workers bearing the costs of a clean future need to be addressed.
Mineral security is not just about access to resources but about control over value chains. India’s response must be strategic, not reactive.
