As the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to disrupt global oil and gas flows, countries are increasingly focusing on short-term energy priorities to the detriment of long-term decarbonisation goals. In such a context, the difficult task of designing climate policies that realign incentives takes on new importance.
An advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice last year left no doubt that states have a legal obligation to prevent significant harm to the climate system, and that a failure to do so carries legal consequences. Now, a new United Nations resolution seeks to put this ruling into practice.
In Australia’s first greenwashing case testing net zero, the Court accused energy company Santos of misleading investors about its emissions reduction and net-zero targets. The Court clarified that climate-related claims should be assessed in context and from the perspective of a reasonable investor, not through strict scientific interpretation.
Evolutionary game theory is useful to devise strategies for real-life situations such as international negotiations and ecological crises, where players are unequal, and choices are complex.
