The ban takes full effect in 2027 but officials warn hundreds of tonnes of scraps will still need burning during the transition. Rising treatment costs could also underming the new policy.
Indonesia's 33 planned waste-to-energy plants could generate 20 megawatts of "green electricity" in Jakarta alone daily, the country's national economic council chairman says. But NGOs worry about pollution from the plants and the displacement of waste pickers.
Malaysian MPs welcomed a memorandum signed by over a hundred civil society organisations urging the government to lead Asean negotiations on a binding treaty to curb plastic production, eliminate toxic chemicals, and manage plastic waste.
Plastic waste is an exploding global problem, with minimal recycling resulting in incineration as a common disposal practice. Shipments of plastic products and plastic waste from the Global North to the Global South are contributing to a flood of plastics that are not recycled and often burned.
