Cambodia’s environment ministry has called on content creators and social media users to stop posting content that promotes the online sale of wildlife products, to tackle the illegal wildlife trade in the country.
Connecting remains too expensive for many rural poor, while solar stopgap measures prove insufficient for their needs.
Trust and influence may have already shifted to social media, where fossil fuel interests are backing creators. Climate organisations must catch up.
Online sales of wildlife products from protected species are booming on Facebook. The platform hosted more than three-fourths of the 22,000 wild animals and their parts known to be sold online between April 2024 and March 2026, valued at US$65 million, according to a recent report.
