Residents on Indonesia’s Bangka Island say wetland destruction from tin mining and oil palm expansion is driving a surge in deadly crocodile attacks along the coast.
The 2026 fire season in Indonesia is already showing early signs of escalation, as burned areas reached 32,637 hectares by February, 20 times higher than the same period in 2025.
The Asia Pacific hub will run in partnership with the Singapore Economic Development Board. It will focus on assessing methodologies for the early retirement of coal-fired power plants and peatland ecosystems.
A higher biodiesel mandate seems green but it could drive plantation expansion which should keep the region in a “watchful” mode for haze risks, says Simon Tay, who chairs the Singapore Institute of International Affairs. Since last week, the rise of hot spots in Sumatra has caused haze to hit several western states in Peninsular Malaysia.
