Philippine government split on joining coalition to cut plastic production: UN treaty participants
The Philippines’ environment agency wants to be part of a group that supports plastic production cuts, but the bureau of investments is likely opposing it due to links to the plastics industry, say Filipino participants attending the negotiations in Ottawa.
Filipinos want efforts to tackle ocean pollution to focus on plastic production cuts, a survey by Greenpeace found ahead of the penultimate meeting for the first ever pact on plastic trash. But environmentalists fret that negotiators are prioritising waste recovery instead.
2024 will be the "year of public hygiene" for the city-state. Beyond enforcement, community clean-up organisation Stridy hopes to see infrastructure improvements such as better-placed bins and signages, as well as more efforts to recognise cleaners.
