With a global plastics treaty still out of reach, experts say the region’s piecemeal bans on waste imports move the target without stemming the flow.
The city's Beverage Container Return Scheme goes live on 1 April. BCRS is targeting a 60 per cent return rate this year, rising to 80 per cent by 2029.
The plastics boom is being driven by fossil fuel and petrochemical giants banking on rising production of packaging, including for ready meals, found a new Greenpeace report, as governments negotiate informal talks for the United Nations Global Plastics Treaty this week.
The position had been vacant for four months amid a deadlock in negotiations for the treaty to curb global plastic pollution.
