Companies should start preparing to adopt China’s latest climate disclosure standards, say experts
The latest framework, which is aligned with international sustainability reporting standards, is currently in effect on a voluntary basis as Chinese regulators determine its application scope and timeline.
China’s central and local governments, as well as state-owned enterprises, are busy preparing for the next five-year planning period, spanning 2026-2030.
This year, ‘greenrinsing’ – shifting climate targets after luring investment – cast a shadow over corporate decarbonisation efforts, while fossil fuel firms leaned on carbon capture technologies to justify ongoing expansion and promoted natural gas as "clean".
In a tense closing plenary, countries protested the lack of finance and new adaptation indicators, amid a failure to include fossil fuels in the final agreement. The hard-won inclusion of the just transition work programme was overshadowed by vague funding promises and the exclusion of critical minerals.
