Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) could cost Asia up to US$700 billion by 2050 and surpass cancer as the world’s leading cause of death, according to a recent report. However, investing in AMR solutions could save the region up to US$15 billion annually in healthcare costs.
The media has been slammed for sensationalising and misrepresenting a hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) outbreak in India and calling it the "tomato flu."
As South Asia generates typhoid strains that are resistant to most antibiotics, the illness has continued to spread from the region to other parts of the world.
