The UK government has reclassified nearly £500m of aid for war-torn and impoverished countries as “climate finance”, in a bid to meet its international commitments under the Paris Agreement.
The announcement by the world's main verifier of corporate climate targets was welcomed by companies. But NGOs say allowing firms to use carbon credits to abate their supply chain emissions undermines SBTi's credibility.
Shell has abandoned a key climate target for 2035 and weakened another goal for 2030, according to its latest “energy transition strategy”.
The environmental disclosure non-profit is undergoing a restructure, which critics say pivots the organisation away from Asia. In response, Bartlett says Asia is strategically important to CDP. Asia's potential to bend the emissions curve is exciting, she says.
