India unveils national electric vehicle plan

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh launched this week a national electric vehicle plan which will help accelerate consumer adoption and domestic manufacturing of the low carbon transport in India.

The National Electric Mobility Mission Plant (NEMMP) aims to improve national energy security, increase domestic manufacturing and tackle the environmental impacts of the automotive industry. It includes a total investment of over Rs 23,000 crore to be equally shared between the Government and the automotive industry.

Manmohan Singh expressed his fresh support for electric vehicles (EVs) at the NEMMP launch, which was attended by transport industry leaders and expert researchers. He said: “These technologies are not only more efficient but they are also cleaner. They have the potential of contributing substantially to our efforts for mitigating the adverse impact of economic development on the environment.”
