China to push for green building in 2014

The Chinese government will now require new urban buildings to comply with mandatory “green” standards and renovate existing buildings to be more eco-friendly by 2015.

According to a Xinhua report, an official from the National Development and Reform Commission has announced that the government will implement a green building code, including energy-saving standards, which state-owned buildings constructed from 2014 onward have to strictly follow.

By next year, the guideline will also cover affordable housing projects in China’s provincial-level cities, provincial capitals and vice provincial-level cities, and public construction projects with an area exceeding 20,000 square meters per building.
