Airbus sets out to prove algae biofuel works

China-based bio-energy firm ENN has teamed up with leading aircraft manufacturer Airbus to develop technology that will turn algae oil into biofuel. Microalgae, said Airbus in a press release, is a promising ingredient for biofuel production for aviation. They added, the use of algae oil as aviation fuel has already been proven and that the venture is to demonstrate that the industrial production of alga biofuel is both ecologically and economically viable.

ENN’s research shows that microalgae can reproduce rapidly and thus can support biofuel production without competing with food production.
